Photo eye and safety edge repair — Metro Vancouver
Half the calls we get where someone says their commercial door will not close are not operator problems. They are safety device problems. The photo eyes are misaligned or the safety edge circuit has an open fault. The operator is doing its job — refusing to close because something is telling it there is an obstruction or an unsafe condition. Fix the safety device and the door closes.

Photo Eyes — How They Work and How They Fail

Photo eyes on commercial overhead doors are infrared sensors mounted on each side of the door near the floor. One side is the transmitter, the other is the receiver. When the beam is broken by something in the opening the operator will not close. They fail through misalignment, contamination of the lens, wiring damage from equipment contact, or outright failure of the IR LED or receiver electronics. We carry common LiftMaster and generic commercial photo eye sets on the truck.

Safety Edges — Monitored Circuits

A safety edge is the rubber or PVC bumper running across the full width of the bottom of the door. When the door contacts something during closing the safety edge compresses and signals the operator to stop and reverse. Commercial operators in BC are required under the BC Safety Standards Act and UL 325 to have monitored entrapment protection. A monitored safety edge is not just a contact switch — it is a circuit that the operator continuously monitors for integrity. If the edge wire is cut, a connector fails, or the edge itself is damaged, the circuit opens and the operator locks out. This is intentional. A non-functional safety edge is more dangerous than no safety edge because it provides false confidence. We see Manaras Silencio units locked out constantly due to safety edge circuit issues. The edge itself is often fine — it is a corroded connector at the bottom corner of the door, a wire that has been pinched at the hinge point, or a connector that has come loose at the board. We test the circuit systematically and find the fault.
