Commercial Garage Door Cable Repair Vancouver

Commercial Garage Door Cable Repair — Vancouver & Richmond

Lift cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to drums on the torsion shaft. When the spring rotates the shaft, the drums wind the cables and pull both sides of the door up evenly. When a cable snaps or slips off the drum, one side of the door loses its lift. The door tilts, binds in the track, and either jams mid-travel or comes down hard on one corner.

Running the opener after a cable failure makes things worse — it can pull the track off the wall, crack the bottom section, or jam the spring shaft. When a cable goes, stop operating the door. Call us: 604-206-5727.

Snapped Cables

The most common call. Steel lift cables corrode over time, particularly in the coastal Lower Mainland climate. A cable that has been under tension for years gets work-hardened at the stress points — where it wraps the drum groove or passes through the bottom bracket crimp. When it finally gives, it usually goes without warning. The door drops hard on one side.

Cable Off the Drum

If someone kept operating the door after a spring broke, or if the door ran with mismatched spring tension for a long time, the cable can unwind from the drum and pile up on the shaft instead of tracking in the drum groove. The door jams. This is a re-tension and re-spool job — but the spring system must be corrected at the same time or it will unspool again within days.

Frayed Cables

Fraying usually shows up near the bottom bracket crimp or the drum edge — individual wire strands separating or a fuzzy section on the cable body. A frayed cable is a cable that is close to snapping. Catching it during a maintenance visit is a short, inexpensive fix. Dealing with it after the snap is an emergency call, usually at an inconvenient time.

How We Repair It

We release spring tension before touching the cables — this step is not optional. New cables are matched to the door weight, height, and drum configuration. We replace both cables even when only one broke, because they wear at the same rate and a one-side replacement means the other side is close behind. We re-spool the drums, set cable tension evenly, verify spring balance by hand, and run the door through full cycles to confirm it tracks straight before leaving.
