GDI HAML-RBH Direct Drive Operator

The HAML-RBH is GDI’s direct drive and jackshaft operator for commercial and industrial doors, rated at 5,000 open and close cycles per day and UL 325 compliant. It is available in 1.0″ or 1.25″ hollow shaft models, so it mounts directly to the door’s torsion shaft.

The useful part of this model for a specifier is that it comes in three distinct enclosure builds rather than one. The ultra-compact 12″ × 12″ × 4″ case solves tight side-room retrofits; the NEMA 4/4X build with a water-tight motor solves wet rooms.

Choosing the enclosure

Start from where the operator physically lives. A dry warehouse wall takes the standard 16″ × 16″ × 6″ NEMA 1 case. A shaft pocket with almost no clearance takes the ultra-compact 12″ × 12″ × 4″. A wash bay, a food-processing room, or an exposed exterior wall takes the NEMA 4/4X build with the water-tight motor — that variant exists precisely so the operator is not the component that fails first in a wet room.

GDI’s sheet notes a caveat on battery backup when the ultra-compact enclosure is used. If you need both the small case and battery backup, we confirm that combination with the factory before the order goes in rather than promising it here.

Direct drive versus a jackshaft conversion

Because the HAML-RBH is a hollow-shaft unit it slides onto the torsion shaft directly. On a retrofit that usually means no new trolley rail and no ceiling work — the operator goes where the shaft already is. That is the practical reason it is specified on doors where the ceiling is full of sprinklers, ducting or racking.

What UL 325 compliance means here

Unlike the GLWD and SGWD gate operators, where GDI lists UL325 as an optional package, the HAML-RBH sheet states UL 325 compliant directly. On a commercial door that means the entrapment-protection requirements are addressed by the operator’s own listing, with the monitored device type confirmed at commissioning.

Common HAML-RBH faults and what they usually mean

Repeated tripping of the overload protector during peak traffic periods typically indicates the unit is being pushed beyond its 5,000-cycle daily rating, especially in high-cycle applications like loading docks or distribution centres. Intermittent operation or failure to start in damp environments often points to moisture ingress in a NEMA 1 enclosure that should have been specified as NEMA 4/4X for washdown areas. A grinding noise when the door moves, with the motor running but no shaft rotation, usually means the hollow shaft has slipped on the torsion tube due to incorrect set-screw torque during installation—this model mounts directly on the shaft, so alignment and clamping force are critical. If the battery backup option fails to engage during a power loss on the ultra-compact HAML-RBH-1030-NLF0000425-1000 build, it is likely because the factory did not confirm compatibility at quote time; the spec sheet explicitly states this must be verified, not assumed. Erratic limit switch behavior or drift in open/close positions commonly results from vibration loosening the armature bolts on the direct-drive motor over time, a characteristic of the jackshaft layout where rotational forces transfer directly to the operator housing.

Specifying a HAML-RBH correctly

Confirm the required daily cycle count does not exceed 5,000 open/close operations; this model’s duty cycle is fixed and cannot be field-upgraded. Verify the torsion shaft diameter at the mounting point—only 1.0 inch or 1.25 inch hollow shaft options are available, and the operator must match the existing shaft exactly; adapters are not part of this model’s design. Select the enclosure based on site conditions: HAML-RBH-2030-NLF0000425-1000 (16 x 16 x 6 in, NEMA 1) for standard indoor use, HAML-RBH-1030-NLF0000425-1000 (12 x 12 x 4 in, NEMA 1) only if space is constrained and battery backup compatibility is factory-confirmed, or HAML-RBH-A830-NLF0000425-1000 (16 x 14 x 7 in, NEMA 4/4X) for exterior or washdown exposure. Ensure the mounting location allows direct coupling to the torsion shaft with adequate clearance for the operator’s footprint—no trolley rail or ceiling modifications are needed, but the shaft must be accessible and level. Finally, validate all optional features, particularly battery backup, with the factory before ordering the ultra-compact variant, as field installation is not supported without prior confirmation.

  • One operator, every common voltage. A single GDI unit connects to 115, 208, 230, 460 or 575 VAC, single or three phase, 50/60 Hz. You are not ordering a voltage-specific part number, which matters when a building’s service turns out to be different from what the drawings said.
  • Sealed, maintenance-free GearMotor. Sealed stainless-steel bearings, no belts, no mechanical limit switches, no hydraulic cylinders to service.
  • Electronically set open and close limits. Nothing mechanical to drift out of adjustment after a few thousand cycles.
  • Soft start and soft stop, with open and close speeds set independently and adjustable on site.
  • Battery backup capability as an add-on, so the door or gate still runs through an outage or a brownout.
  • 24 VDC 1.5 A and 24 VAC 1 A available for external devices — loop detectors, photo eyes, card readers.
  • UL/ULC listed, with field-upgradable Opto-Block, NEMA 4 photo-eye UL-325 packages, and a thermostat-controlled heater (115–575 VAC) orderable at any time.
