GDI JHMG-VC Industrial Door Operator
The JHMG-VC is the highest-cycle operator in the GDI line on file here: GDI rates it for 10,000 open and close cycles per day. It runs horizontal doors, vertical doors — spring, counterweight, or completely unbalanced — and rolling steel doors.
What surprises people is the size. The GearMotor is 4.3″ × 4.3″ × 11″ and weighs 18 lb, built into an aluminum body GDI states will withstand corrosive and toxic environments. On a retrofit where headroom and side room are already spoken for, that compactness is often the deciding factor.

The standard panel ships with an open/close button and a power indicator light. Open and close direction is settable on site, so the same unit suits either hand of door.
PositionTrak — why it matters on a busy door
The JHMG-VC carries PositionTrak, which tracks and remembers door position with or without power. After an outage the door does not need recalibration — it knows where it is. On a high-cycle door in a parkade or a cold-storage room, that removes the most common Monday-morning service call after a weekend power interruption.

The car wash and food-facility listings are the tell: this is the unit specified where the operator is going to live in a wet, washdown, or corrosive environment, which is why the aluminum body and the NEMA 4/4X panel are standard rather than optional.
Specifying it for a cold-storage or washdown room
Two questions decide the build. First, panel rating — NEMA 4/4X is standard here, and it is the right answer for washdown; NEMA 1, 12 or 13 is available where the panel sits in a dry electrical room instead. Second, whether you want battery backup, which is an add-on across the GDI line and can be ordered later as a field upgrade.
Common JHMG-VC faults and what they usually mean
Door reverses or stops mid-travel on a vertical cold-storage door. The JHMG-VC is rated for completely unbalanced doors, but the spring or counterweight system must still be intact. A broken spring, seized counterweight pulley, or iced-up guide track forces the gearmotor to absorb the full static load. That load spikes current instantly; the controller sees it as an obstruction and triggers the soft-stop routine. Check the door balance and track condition before swapping the operator.
Horizontal high-speed fabric door cycles 12,000 times a day and the operator overheats. The nameplate says 10,000 cycles daily — highest in the GDI line — but that rating assumes normal door friction and proper voltage. Added wind load, misaligned rollers, or low incoming voltage raises motor current above the thermal trip point. Verify actual cycle count with the facility manager and measure voltage under load.
Control panel buttons stop responding in a car-wash bay. The standard NEMA 4/4X composite enclosure resists washdown, but high-pressure wands aimed at the faceplate can force water past the membrane switches. If the site uses daily chemical foaming, specify the NEMA 4/4X rating and mount the panel above wand height. NEMA 1, 12, or 13 enclosures will fail in that environment.
After a power outage, a rolling steel door refuses to run until limits are re-taught. PositionTrak remembers door position without power, so no recalibration is needed. If the door still demands a re-learn, the limit board lost its reference — usually because the 24 VDC supply dipped during a brownout or the battery-backup add-on was not installed. Confirm the backup module is present and the supply is stable.
Specifying a JHMG-VC correctly
Confirm the door type and balance condition first. The JHMG-VC handles horizontal doors, vertical doors with springs or counterweights, and completely unbalanced vertical doors, plus rolling steel and high-speed fabric or vinyl rollup. An unbalanced vertical door puts constant torque on the output shaft; size the operator for peak starting load, not just door weight.
Verify the exact supply voltage and phase. One unit covers 115, 208, 230, 460, or 575 VAC, single or three phase, 50 or 60 Hz. The installer must set the internal taps or jumpers to match the building feed — wrong tap selection burns the gearmotor winding on first start.
Choose the control-panel enclosure for the actual environment. Standard is NEMA 4/4X composite (16 × 14 × 8 in) with open/close buttons and a power indicator. NEMA 1, 12, or 13 are available but only for dry, indoor, non-corrosive spaces. Car washes, cold storage, food plants, and agricultural buildings need the 4/4X rating; anything less will fail inspection and corrode inside a year.
Decide on the battery-backup add-on at order time. It is not factory-installed. If the facility requires operation during outages — parking garages, pharmaceutical cold rooms, secure storage — add the UL/ULC-listed module. Without it, the door stays locked in position until utility power returns.
Confirm whether UL325 compliance is required. It is optional on this spec sheet; some jurisdictions or insurance policies mandate it. If the job needs monitored entrapment protection, order the compliant package and plan for the extra photo-eyes or edge sensors the standard unit does not include.

- Electronically set open and close limits. Nothing mechanical to drift out of adjustment after a few thousand cycles.
- Soft start and soft stop, with open and close speeds set independently and adjustable on site.
- Battery backup capability as an add-on, so the door or gate still runs through an outage or a brownout.
- 24 VDC 1.5 A and 24 VAC 1 A available for external devices — loop detectors, photo eyes, card readers.
- UL/ULC listed, with field-upgradable Opto-Block, NEMA 4 photo-eye UL-325 packages, and a thermostat-controlled heater (115–575 VAC) orderable at any time.
