What the RJDC MAXUM is and why you would need one

The LiftMaster RJDC MAXUM is a rear-mount jackshaft operator built for commercial sectional doors where there is not enough room on the torsion shaft for a standard side-mount unit. Same MAXUM control board and 24VDC brushless motor as the JHDC, but the mounting position shifts to the rear of the shaft — typically bolted to the back wall.

You see these in tight mechanical rooms, in buildings where a header beam blocks the side approach, or anywhere the door springs and shaft sit close to a wall. The operator drives the shaft from behind the door rather than beside it. If your opening has a column or a support post that kills side clearance, this is the unit that solves it.

What the specs actually mean for your building

Rear-mount jackshaft. The operator connects to the torsion shaft behind the door. That means the motor sits out of the way of the door path, the springs, and the cables. No track interference. No motor hanging into usable floor space. For a loading dock where every inch of wall matters, that is the difference between fitting a dock leveler and not.

24VDC brushless motor. DC motors give you soft-start and soft-stop — the door accelerates and decelerates gradually instead of slamming into the stops. That matters for door life, track wear, and for tenants who work near the opening. Brushless means no brushes to replace, which is the most common motor failure point on AC operators. On a door that cycles thirty times a day, that matters.

120 / 240 / 480V · 1Ø or 3Ø. The RJDC accepts whatever power your building has. A warehouse with three-phase 480V does not need a transformer. A small strata parkade on single-phase 120V does not need a new feed. The installer sets it up for what is on site.

MyQ commercial connectivity. You get remote monitoring, cycle counts, fault alerts, and the ability to open or close the door from a phone or a central system. For a facility manager running multiple doors, this is the difference between knowing a door is down before a driver tells you, and finding out when a truck is backed into the dock.

UL 325 listed. The safety listing covers entrapment protection, reversing logic, and the photo-eye and edge sensor requirements. If an inspector or a fire marshal asks, the unit is listed.

Which buildings it suits — and where it does not

This operator fits commercial sectional doors up to sizes that the published specs support. Good applications include:

Parkade doors in strata buildings where the side wall is a concrete column
Warehouse interior doors where a mezzanine or racking blocks side access
Loading dock doors with equipment tight to the opening
Any door where the torsion shaft extends past the door width and you have rear wall space

Where it is the wrong choice:

High-cycle doors. If your door cycles more than a hundred times a day, look at a heavy-duty operator with a larger motor and a higher duty cycle rating. The RJDC is a solid commercial unit, but it is not a dock-door-with-continuous-traffic unit.
Insulated or fire-rated doors with high wind-load requirements. Check the operator torque against the door weight and wind load rating. Your supplier can confirm the match.
No rear wall access. The RJDC needs a mounting surface behind the shaft. If the back of the shaft is open air or a pit, you need a side-mount unit or a different approach.

What fails on this class of unit and what to watch for

The 24VDC brushless motor is reliable, but the components around it wear.

Limit switches. The MAXUM board uses electronic limits rather than mechanical cams. That is good — fewer moving parts. But the limits can drift over time, especially after a power surge or a brownout. If the door starts stopping six inches off the floor or reversing at the top, that is usually a limit adjustment, not a mechanical failure. Have a technician re-set them.

Cable tension. Jackshaft operators put torque directly into the torsion shaft. If one cable loses tension — from a broken spring or a worn drum — the operator will keep turning and the door will rack. That bends tracks and damages panels. Check cable tension monthly on high-cycle doors. If you see one cable sagging, stop using the door.

MyQ connectivity. The network module can drop off the Wi-Fi or the building network. That does not affect door operation, but you lose remote monitoring. If the door works locally but the app shows it offline, the network connection needs resetting. Common in buildings with metal-clad parkades that block wireless signal.

Metro Vancouver conditions. Coastal damp gets into control boards if the operator is in an unheated, unsealed room. The RJDC is not a weatherproof unit. If it is mounted in a parkade that gets salt air from the river or the port, make sure the enclosure is sealed and the board stays dry. Condensation inside the housing will kill a board faster than cycle count will.

What ordering or replacing it involves

Before you order, have three measurements ready:

1. Door width and height. The operator must match the door size. 2. Shaft diameter and length. The RJDC mounts on the rear of the shaft, so the shaft needs to extend past the door track on the rear side. If it does not, you need a shaft extension or a different operator. 3. Clearance behind the shaft. You need at least enough room for the operator body and the mounting bracket. Measure from the back of the shaft to the nearest obstruction.

The unit comes with the MAXUM control board pre-programmed for basic operation. A technician will set the limits, adjust the force settings, and pair the MyQ connection. That takes about an hour on a straightforward install.

If you are replacing an existing operator, check the mounting plate pattern. The RJDC may require a different bracket than the unit it replaces. Your installer can confirm during the site visit.
