What Horsepower Actually Does
Horsepower on a commercial door operator is not about speed. It is about torque — the twisting force that gets a heavy door moving from a dead stop and keeps it moving through the full travel without stalling. A 1/2 hp motor and a 1 hp motor will both open a standard 10-foot door at roughly the same inches-per-second. The difference shows up when the door weighs 600 pounds, the temperature drops to -5°C, and the operator has already run 40 cycles today. The undersized motor overheats. The thermal overload trips. The bay sits open until the motor cools.
Door Weight Is the Starting Point
You cannot size an operator by door dimensions alone. A 12×14 insulated sectional with 2-inch polyurethane panels weighs roughly twice what a non-insulated 24-gauge door of the same size weighs. Add wind struts, heavier gauge steel, or a full-view aluminum section and the weight climbs again. The operator does not know the door size. It only feels the load on the output shaft.
Typical weight ranges for common commercial doors:
- Non-insulated 24-gauge sectional, 10×10: 180–220 lb
- Insulated 2-inch polyurethane, 12×14: 350–450 lb
- 20-gauge steel with wind struts, 14×16: 500–650 lb
- Full-view aluminum, 12×14: 280–350 lb
- Rolling steel grille, 12×12: 400–550 lb
If you do not know the actual weight, you are guessing. The manufacturer’s spec sheet for the door model is the only reliable source.
Lift Type Changes the Load
A standard-lift door rolls up horizontal track. The operator lifts the full door weight vertically for the first few feet, then the horizontal track carries most of it. A high-lift or vertical-lift door stays vertical longer. The operator carries the full weight through more of the travel. A full vertical-lift door on a 20-foot wall means the motor lifts the entire door weight for the full 20 feet. That requires more torque — often a full horsepower step up from the same door on standard lift.
Jackshaft operators mounted on the torsion shaft feel this directly. Trolley operators on a drawbar feel it through the chain or belt. The physics is the same: vertical travel equals full weight on the motor.
Cycle Rating Is a Separate Spec
Horsepower and duty cycle are printed on the same nameplate but they answer different questions. Horsepower says “can it lift this weight?” Duty cycle says “can it lift this weight this many times per hour without overheating?”
Manaras Opera-J (OPJ) rates at 1 hp continuous-duty motor, 25 cycles per hour, 100 cycles per day. The Opera-MJ (OMJ) rates at 1/2 hp intermittent-duty, 14 cycles per hour, 50 cycles per day. Both can lift a 400-pound door. Only the OPJ can do it every 4 minutes all day. Put an OMJ on a loading dock door that cycles 80 times a day and the motor windings will cook inside of a month.
Duty cycle is determined by motor design — continuous-duty vs intermittent-duty — and by the brake and clutch system’s ability to dissipate heat. You cannot fix a duty-cycle problem by adding horsepower. You fix it by choosing an operator rated for the actual cycle count.
The 1/2 hp vs 1 hp Decision
For most commercial sectional doors under 400 lb on standard lift with fewer than 50 cycles per day, a 1/2 hp intermittent-duty operator (Manaras OMJ/OMH, LiftMaster J-series equivalent) is adequate. It costs less, draws less current, and fits standard 120V single-phase circuits.
Step to 1 hp continuous-duty (Manaras OPJ/OPH, LiftMaster H-series equivalent) when:
- Door weight exceeds 450 lb
- High-lift or vertical-lift configuration
- Cycle count exceeds 50 per day
- Door operates in unheated space below freezing regularly
- You want headroom for future heavier panels or added insulation
The price difference between 1/2 hp and 1 hp in the same operator family is typically 15–20%. The cost of a premature motor replacement — including emergency call-out, downtime, and re-programming — is ten times that.
Voltage and Phase Matter More Than You Think
A 1 hp single-phase motor on 120V draws 12–14 amps at startup. That is near the limit of a standard 15A circuit. Voltage drop on a long run from the panel means the motor starts weaker and runs hotter. The same 1 hp motor on 208V three-phase draws 4–5 amps per leg, starts harder, runs cooler, and lasts longer. Three-phase power is not “better” in abstract — it delivers the torque the nameplate promises. Single-phase on a long wire run often does not.
If the building has three-phase, use it. If the operator location is more than 50 feet from the panel on 120V, have an electrician run 208/240V single-phase or three-phase to the operator. The motor will thank you.
Environmental Derating
A damp-environment operator (Manaras W-code) has sealed bearings and a different brake material. A corrosive-environment unit (C-code) adds epoxy-coated internals and stainless hardware. These do not change the horsepower rating. They change the motor’s ability to hold that rating over time. A standard motor in a car wash bay loses effective torque as bearings corrode and brake dust contaminates the windings. Two years in, a 1 hp motor may perform like a 1/2 hp motor. Spec the environment code for the space, not the door.
How to Verify Before You Order
1. Get the door weight from the manufacturer’s spec sheet. Not the quote. Not the invoice. The engineering spec sheet.
2. Confirm lift type: standard, high-lift, vertical-lift, or full vertical.
3. Count actual cycles per day. Not “about 20.” Watch the door for a week. Log every open/close.
4. Check voltage at the operator location under load. Not at the panel. At the operator.
5. Note the environment: standard, damp, corrosive, hazardous.
Match those five data points to the operator selection guide. The horsepower falls out of the table. There is no judgment call.
What Goes Wrong When You Guess
Undersized motor: thermal overload trips daily in summer, hourly in winter. Technician resets it. Owner stops calling. Door gets propped open with a forklift. Weather seal shreds. Header rots. Insurance claim follows.
Oversized motor on wrong duty cycle: 1 hp intermittent-duty on a 100-cycle door. Motor runs cool but the brake wears out in six months. The clutch slips. Door drifts down overnight. Safety edge fails to reverse. Someone’s truck gets hit.
Wrong voltage: 1 hp single-phase on 100-foot 120V run. Door opens fine at noon. Fails at 6 a.m. when voltage sags. Technician replaces motor. Same motor fails again. Owner buys a different brand. Same problem. Electrician finally runs 208V. Problem solved.
The Short Version
Horsepower lifts the weight. Duty cycle handles the repetition. Voltage delivers the rated torque. Environment rating preserves both over time. Miss any one and the operator fails on schedule.
