What duty cycle actually means
Duty cycle is the percentage of time a motor can run before it must cool down. An intermittent-duty motor rated for 25% duty cycle runs 15 seconds, then rests 45 seconds. A continuous-duty motor runs without a mandated rest period. The rating is stamped on the nameplate — look for “INT” or “CONT” beside the horsepower.
Most commercial doors ship with intermittent-duty operators because they cost less and suit low-traffic openings. The problem starts when traffic grows and nobody changes the operator.
Intermittent duty — where it works and where it fails
Intermittent-duty motors are built for doors that cycle 10 to 15 times per hour, maximum. That covers a typical warehouse bay that opens for a truck twice a shift, or a strata parkade gate that sees a burst of cars at shift change then sits idle.
The Manaras MLT trolley operator spec sheet shows a 1/2 HP, 115V single-phase intermittent-duty motor with instant reverse and internal thermal overload protection. It’s designed for “smaller and low-cycling industrial standard lift sectional doors” — the manufacturer’s own words. The thermal overload will trip if you exceed the duty cycle. That protects the motor windings, but it also leaves the door dead until the motor cools.
If your door hits 20 cycles an hour, you are past the design limit. The overload will trip weekly, then daily. Each trip ages the insulation. You are not buying time; you are buying a replacement motor.
Continuous duty — what changes inside the motor
Continuous-duty motors use larger windings, better insulation class (typically Class F or H), and heavier bearings. They dissipate heat through a larger frame surface area and often run cooler at the same load. The tradeoff is physical size — a continuous-duty 1 HP motor is longer and heavier than an intermittent 1 HP — and price, typically 30 to 50% more for the operator unit.
You do not need continuous duty for a door that cycles 12 times an hour. You do need it for a loading dock that cycles 40 times an hour during receiving, or a parkade gate that runs 60 cycles an hour at 5 p.m.
How to count your actual cycles
Do not guess. Stand at the door for one full business day with a clicker, or pull the operator’s cycle counter if it has one. Most LiftMaster Maxum and Manaras commercial boards log cycles in the diagnostic menu.
Break the day into hours. Note the peak hour. A warehouse might average 8 cycles/hour but spike to 35 during the 7 a.m. receiving window. Size for the peak hour, not the average. The motor does not care about your average.
The 75% rule
If your peak-hour cycle count exceeds 75% of the operator’s rated cycles-per-hour, move up one duty class. An intermittent operator rated for 15 cycles/hour should not run more than 11 in your peak hour. A continuous operator rated for 60 cycles/hour gives you headroom to 45.
This is not manufacturer guidance — it is field experience. Motors that run at 90% of rating fail in 18 months. Motors that run at 60% last 10 years.
Voltage and phase matter more than you think
A 115V single-phase intermittent motor draws high current on start. At 20 cycles/hour, the start winding sees 20 inrush events per hour. That winding fails first. The same operator in 208V three-phase splits the inrush across three windings and runs cooler. If you have three-phase power at the header, use it. The operator costs the same; the motor lasts longer.
Jackshaft vs trolley — duty cycle is not the only variable
A jackshaft operator couples directly to the torsion shaft. No chain, no trolley, less friction. A trolley operator adds chain tension and track friction. At the same duty rating, the jackshaft motor runs cooler because it does less mechanical work per cycle.
If you are at the edge of intermittent duty on a 16-foot high-lift door, a jackshaft continuous-duty unit will survive. A trolley intermittent unit will not. The difference is mechanical efficiency, not motor magic.
When to replace vs when to upgrade the motor
If the operator is 12 years old and the gearbox is quiet, swapping the motor to continuous-duty can make sense — if the control board supports it. Most boards do not. The logic board expects a specific motor resistance and thermal profile. A mismatched motor throws fault codes or nuisance trips.
New operator, correct duty rating, matched board. That is the reliable path. The old unit becomes a shelf spare for a low-cycle door.
Cold weather multiplies the load
At -10°C, door seals stiffen, rollers drag, grease thickens. The motor pulls 15 to 20% more current per cycle. An intermittent motor that was fine in July trips its overload in January. If your building sees freezing temperatures, add 20% to your peak-hour cycle count before you pick a duty rating.

What to do next
Count your peak hour. Match the table. If you are over the line, spec a continuous-duty operator with three-phase power if available. The extra cost pays for itself in the first avoided emergency call.
