What the Nameplate Tells You
Every commercial door operator ships with a motor nameplate that lists phase, voltage, frequency, and full-load amps. That plate is the contract between the opener and the building. If the supply does not match, the operator will not start, will trip breakers, or will burn the windings in weeks.
A 3 phase door operator needs three hot conductors plus a ground. The voltage in Metro Vancouver is almost always 208 V, 240 V, 480 V, or 600 V at 60 Hz. Single-phase units run on one hot, a neutral, and ground — typically 120 V or 208/240 V. The phase count is not optional. You cannot run a three-phase motor on single-phase power with a capacitor kit and expect commercial duty-cycle life.
Why Three-Phase Exists on Commercial Doors
Three-phase power delivers constant torque. The three windings reach peak current 120 electrical degrees apart, so the magnetic field rotates smoothly. A single-phase motor has a dead spot every half-cycle where torque drops to zero. To start, it needs a start winding, a centrifugal switch, or a capacitor — all parts that fail under high-cycle use.
On a warehouse door cycling 50 times a day, that difference shows up in motor temperature. A three-phase motor runs cooler, starts harder, and handles the inrush current of a 400 lb door without nuisance tripping. The Manaras Opera-H and Opera-GH lines, for example, list 208 V, 240 V, 480 V, and 600 V three-phase codes (623, 673, 643, 653) specifically for this duty.

Check the panel. A three-phase panel has three breakers ganged together with a common handle tie. Single-phase panels show single-pole or double-pole breakers only. If you see a transformer on the property feeding 600 V down to 120/208 V, the operator voltage follows the sub-panel, not the utility feed.
Voltage Drop and Wire Run Length
A 208 V three-phase motor pulls more current than the same horsepower at 600 V. On a 150 ft run from the panel to the operator, #12 AWG may drop 4–5 V at full-load amps. That drops starting torque. The fix is not a larger breaker — it is larger wire or a higher-voltage motor. Manaras lists 600 V three-phase (code 653) for exactly this reason: lower current, smaller conductor, less drop.
If the existing operator is 208 V three-phase and the new one is 240 V three-phase, the motor will run hot. The windings are designed for a specific volts-per-hertz ratio. Running 208 V on a 240 V nameplate reduces flux, increases slip, and shortens insulation life. Match the nameplate to the panel, not to what the distributor has in stock.
Phase Conversion: When It Works and When It Does Not
Rotary phase converters and variable frequency drives (VFDs) can synthesize three-phase from single-phase input. They are legitimate for a single operator on a site that genuinely lacks three-phase service. They are not a shortcut to avoid a panel upgrade when the building already has three-phase but the convenient sub-panel is single-phase.
A VFD adds programmable ramp-up, soft start, and brake control — useful on high-lift or vertical-lift doors where the motor sees a heavy breakaway load. But a VFD on a 600 V motor fed from 240 V single-phase requires a step-up transformer, and the combined losses erase the efficiency gain. Size the VFD for the motor’s full-load amps at the *input* voltage, not the output.
How to Spec the Replacement
1. Read the existing motor nameplate. Write down phase, voltage, Hz, FLA, HP, and RPM.
2. Verify the panel voltage at the breaker feeding the operator — under load, not open-circuit.
3. Measure the conductor size and run length back to that breaker.
4. Confirm the door cycle count per day. A 1 HP three-phase motor on a 25-cycle door is oversized; on a 200-cycle door it is undersized.
5. Select an operator with the same phase and voltage, equal or higher HP, and a duty rating that matches the cycle count.
The Manaras product code structure makes this explicit: the last three digits are frequency, voltage, and phase. Code 623 = 60 Hz, 208 V, three-phase. Code 611 = 60 Hz, 120 V, single-phase. Do not guess. Cross the code to the spec sheet.
What Happens When You Guess
A 208 V three-phase motor connected to 240 V three-phase draws 15 % more current at locked rotor. The overload heater may not trip fast enough. The insulation ages at double the rate for every 10 °C rise. Six months later the motor fails on a Tuesday at 6 a.m. with a truck waiting at the dock.
A single-phase operator installed where three-phase exists saves $300 on the motor and costs $2,000 in service calls over two years — start capacitors, centrifugal switches, burned windings. The math never favors the wrong phase.

If the panel is three-phase, buy a three-phase operator. If the panel is single-phase and the door cycles more than 15 times a day, budget for a VFD or a phase converter — or have an electrician pull three-phase to the header. The operator is the cheapest part of the system. The downtime is not.
