A limit switch tells the operator when to stop. When it drifts, the door stops six inches off the floor, reverses before sealing, or slams into the header. Most limit problems are not operator failures — they are mechanical drift, worn cams, or a loose drive chain. This page covers how to diagnose which one you have and what the fix involves.
What a Limit Switch Actually Does
Every commercial door operator — jackshaft, trolley, or hoist — needs a way to know “open” and “closed.” The limit switch assembly provides that reference. It is a mechanical or electro-mechanical device driven by the operator’s output shaft (or a secondary reduction) that opens and closes contacts at two set points: up limit and down limit.
On a LiftMaster Maxum or Manaras Opera operator, the limit assembly sits inside the control box or on the side of the motor housing. On a Hörmann ProMatic, it is integrated into the operator head. The principle is the same: rotation equals travel. If the ratio between shaft turns and door travel changes, the limits drift.
The Two Common Designs You Will See
Rotary Cam (LiftMaster, Older Manaras, GDI)
A plastic or nylon cam rides on a threaded shaft. As the shaft turns, the cam moves axially. Two adjustable collars — or in some designs, two separate cams — trip a microswitch at each end of travel. Adjustment is a screwdriver and a few turns. Simple, but the threaded shaft collects grit, the cams wear flat, and the microswitch actuators fatigue.
Accu-Cam (Manaras Opera ECB Board 070 Operators)
The Accu-Cam system replaces the threaded shaft with a splined hub and two independently adjustable cam lobes. Each lobe has a setscrew locking it to the hub. No threads to strip. No axial play. You loosen the setscrew, rotate the lobe to the new trip point, retighten. The ECB 070 board reads the switch state and — critically — monitors for reverse-wiring detection. If the door travel direction and the limit switch signals disagree, the board stops the door and flashes a fault code. That feature catches a swapped wire pair before it damages the door.

The last row is the most dangerous. The operator thinks it is working. The door is not moving. Someone presses the wall button again. The chain snaps tight. That is how you bend a header or shear a bottom bracket.
How to Check Before You Adjust
1. Disconnect the operator. Pull the release. Run the door by hand. It must move freely, balance at mid-travel, and seal at the floor. If it binds, drags, or won’t stay put, fix the door first. Adjusting limits on a binding door masks the real problem.
2. Verify the operator runs the correct direction. Momentary jog. Watch the output shaft. Clockwise should close (on most jackshafts). If it runs backward, the motor leads are swapped — fix that before touching limits.
3. Count shaft turns. From full close to full open, count output shaft revolutions. Compare to the operator’s spec sheet. A 12-ft high-lift door on a 4:1 reduction takes roughly 18 turns. If you count 22, the limit range is wrong for the door — someone installed the wrong operator or the wrong limit assembly.
Adjusting Rotary Cam Limits
1. Remove the limit cover. Identify the up and down cams — usually coloured red (up) and white or blue (down).
2. Run the door to the wrong limit. Stop it.
3. Insert a screwdriver into the cam adjustment slot. Turn toward the microswitch to make the door stop sooner; away to make it run longer. One click ≈ ½ in. of door travel on a standard-lift door.
4. Jog the door. Re-check. Repeat until the door seals at the floor and clears the header by ¼ in.
5. Tighten any lock nuts. Replace the cover.
Do not adjust limits to compensate for a door that reverses on the safety edge. That is an entrapment device fault — photo-eye misalignment, safety edge short, or the advance-close point set wrong on the ECB 070. Fix the sensor. The limit is not the variable there.
Adjusting Accu-Cam Limits (Manaras ECB 070)
1. Power the operator. Put the ECB 070 into limit-set mode: press and hold the OPEN and CLOSE test buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. The diagnostic LEDs will flash the limit-set pattern.
2. Use the OPEN/CLOSE test buttons to jog the door to the desired down position. The door should kiss the floor — weather seal compressed, no daylight.
3. Press the STOP button once. The down limit is now registered in non-volatile memory.
4. Jog to the desired up position. Header clearance ¼ in. Press STOP. Up limit registered.
4. Exit limit-set mode: press OPEN and CLOSE together for 3 seconds. LEDs return to normal.
5. Run a full cycle from the wall station. Verify.
The ECB 070 stores limits in non-volatile memory. Power loss does not erase them. But if you swap the motor leads after setting limits, the door will run the opposite direction and the limits will be wrong. The board’s reverse-wiring detection will catch it and fault — but only on the first cycle after the swap.
Why Limits Drift
- Loose drive chain. The operator output shaft turns, but the door lags. The limit assembly thinks the door moved further than it did. Over weeks, the down limit creeps open. Check chain tension monthly on high-cycle doors.
- Spring relaxation. Torsion springs lose 5–10% tension in the first 500 cycles. The door gets heavier. The operator works harder. The limit shaft turns slightly more per cycle. The up limit drifts down.
- Cam wear. Nylon cams on rotary assemblies wear flat at the microswitch contact point. The switch trips early. Replace the cam, not just the switch.
- Vibration. A loose limit cover lets the whole assembly shake. Setscrews back out. Microswitch actuators fatigue. Tighten the cover. Use threadlocker on Accu-Cam setscrews if the operator sees heavy vibration (loading dock, waste transfer).
When to Stop and Call a Technician
- The limit assembly is physically damaged — cracked housing, stripped splines, burned microswitch contacts.
- The ECB 070 flashes a fault code you cannot clear (consult the Manaras Opera service manual for code definitions).
- You have adjusted limits three times in six months. Something else is moving — track spread, header settlement, spring failure.
- The door is a fire-rated assembly. Limit adjustments on fire doors require a drop test and re-certification. Do not touch them.
