Door Control Station Wiring — B2 vs C2 Modes Explained

What the wiring mode actually changes

A door control station — the three-button box on the wall labeled open, close, and stop — does not decide how the door moves. The operator does. The station only sends signals. The wiring mode (B2 or C2) tells the operator how to interpret those signals.

Both modes use the same three buttons. Both use two normally-open contacts (open and close) and one normally-closed contact (stop). The difference is what the operator demands before it will close the door.

B2 wiring — momentary contact both ways

In B2 mode, a momentary press of the close button is enough. The operator receives the signal and runs the door to the closed limit. You can walk away. The door closes on its own.

This is the default on most commercial operators when no safety devices are connected or when the installation meets code without monitored entrapment protection.

What B2 requires: nothing beyond the station itself. The stop button breaks the circuit instantly if pressed. Open and close are momentary — press, release, door moves.

Where B2 gets used: interior warehouse doors with no pedestrian traffic, secured loading docks where the area is clear before the button is pressed, doors with a monitored safety edge or photo eyes that satisfy code separately.

C2 wiring — constant pressure to close

In C2 mode, the close button must be held continuously. Release it and the door stops immediately. Open remains momentary — press once, door opens to limit. Stop remains normally closed.

What C2 requires: the operator must be configured for C2 (usually a dip switch or menu setting) and the station wired to match. The close button contact is the same normally-open contact; the operator logic changes.

Where C2 gets used: any door where code requires constant-pressure close because monitored entrapment protection is not present. This includes most pedestrian-access doors, parkade entries, and any door where a person or vehicle could be in the path without the operator knowing.

How to tell which mode you have

Stand at the station. Press and release the close button.

  • Door runs to close on its own → B2.
  • Door moves only while you hold the button, stops the instant you let go → C2.

If the door reverses or stops mid-travel in either mode, that is a separate issue — safety edge, photo eye, limit switch, or force setting. The wiring mode only governs whether the close command latches.

Wiring the station — terminal by terminal

Manaras STATION020 (interior, NEMA 1) and STATION078 (exterior, IP66/NEMA 4X) both ship with the same contact block: two NO, one NC. Labels on the block read OPEN, CLOSE, STOP, and COM (common).

Typical wiring:

  • COM to operator common terminal.
  • OPEN (NO) to operator open input.
  • CLOSE (NO) to operator close input.
  • STOP (NC) in series with the operator stop circuit — usually between the operator’s stop terminal and the common or safety circuit, depending on the operator brand.

The stop contact is normally closed. Wire breaks, door stops. That is the fail-safe.

For C2 mode: the same physical wiring. The operator’s programming determines whether the close input latches (B2) or requires maintained contact (C2). Do not rewire the station to change modes — change the operator setting.

Common mistakes

Swapping open and close wires. Door opens when you press close. Obvious once you test, but common on first install.

Wiring stop as NO instead of NC. The stop button fails open (contact closes when pressed) instead of fail-safe. A broken wire or failed contact then does nothing. The door will not stop when the button is hit. Always verify the stop contact opens when pressed.

Leaving the station ungrounded. Metal enclosure stations (STATION020) need the ground lug connected. Polycarbonate (STATION078) does not, but the operator cabinet ground must be solid regardless.

Running station wire in the same conduit as motor leads. Induced noise on the low-voltage control circuit causes ghost operation — door opens or closes on its own. Keep control wiring separate. Shielded cable helps; separation is better.

When the mode must change

A door originally wired B2 gets a new tenant. Pedestrian traffic appears. Code now requires constant-pressure close or monitored entrapment protection. You have two paths:

1. Reprogram the operator to C2. No rewiring at the station. Test: hold close button, door moves; release, door stops. Done.

2. Add monitored photo eyes or a monitored safety edge and keep B2. This is the better fix if the door cycles frequently — operators hate holding a button for a 14-foot door.

The choice depends on the operator model. Some older operators do not support monitored devices. C2 becomes the only compliant option without replacing the operator.

What the spec sheets confirm

Manaras STATION020 and STATION078 both list: “Operator Operating Mode: B2 or C2 wiring (momentary contact to open / close or momentary contact to open / stop and constant pressure to close).” The station hardware is identical for both modes. The operator decides.

Both stations carry UL listing. STATION078 adds CSA and IP66/NEMA 4X/13 for exterior or washdown environments. Operating temperature -25°C to 70°C. Contact ratings up to 6A at 120VAC — more than enough for operator control circuits.

Troubleshooting checklist

Door does not close from the station:

1. Verify operator is in run mode, not lockout or timer-to-close disable.

2. Check stop circuit continuity — NC contact at station, any E-stop devices, safety edge, photo eye relays. One open contact kills close.

3. Test close button with a meter at the operator terminals. Momentary continuity on press? If yes, station and wiring are good. Operator logic or safety device is the issue.

4. If C2 mode: hold button and measure. Continuity must persist while held. Intermittent contact = worn button or loose wire.

Door closes but reverses before floor:

  • Not a wiring mode issue. Check safety edge, photo eyes, force setting, limit switch, track binding.

Station buttons feel mushy or stick:

  • STATION020: interior steel enclosure, not sealed. Dust and moisture degrade contacts. Replace the contact block (Manaras PUSH148/PUSH149 for alternate NO/NC).
  • STATION078: sealed to IP66. If buttons fail, water ingress past the membrane. Replace the station.

Closing

Wire the station once. Set the operator mode to match the site conditions and code. Test both open and close before you leave. If the next tenant changes the traffic pattern, change the operator setting — not the wire.
