Rolling Code vs Fixed Code Door Remotes

How the two technologies differ

A fixed code remote transmits the same digital sequence every time you press the button. The code is set by a bank of DIP switches inside the transmitter and matched to identical switches on the receiver. A rolling code remote generates a new code for every press using an algorithm shared between that specific transmitter and receiver. The receiver accepts only the next valid code in the sequence and rejects anything that has already been used.

Why fixed code exists and where it still shows up

Fixed code (often called DIP switch code) was the industry standard through the 1990s and early 2000s. It is simple to program: open the transmitter, match the switch positions to the receiver, and you are done. You will still find it on older Manaras Series 0 operators, legacy LiftMaster commercial units, and many aftermarket universal receivers installed during past service calls. The RADIOEM 901 keychain transmitter is a current fixed code model built to retrofit those older systems without replacing the receiver.

The security problem with fixed code

A fixed code can be captured with a basic receiver and replayed later. The number of possible combinations on a 10-switch DIP bank is 1,024 — trivial for a code grabber to cycle through in seconds. Anyone with a scanner parked near your loading dock can record the transmission when a driver presses the button and open the door at will. In a strata parkade or warehouse with dozens of remotes in circulation, one compromised transmitter puts the whole building at risk.

How rolling code stops replay attacks

Rolling code uses a hopping algorithm — typically KeeLoq or a proprietary variant — that advances the code each transmission. The receiver maintains a synchronization window (usually 256 codes ahead) so it accepts the next press even if a few signals were missed. Pairing is still straightforward: put the receiver in learn mode, press the transmitter button once, and the two devices exchange the seed value that locks them together.

Compatibility across brands

Most commercial operators sold in Canada since roughly 2010 use rolling code, but the algorithms are not universal. A Manaras rolling code transmitter will not pair with a LiftMaster receiver, and vice versa. Cross-brand compatibility only exists when both sides use a shared receiver platform such as the Manaras RADIORE901, which can be wired into operators from Amarr, Raynor, Hörmann, and others. Retrofitting without replacing the operator

This lets you move a fixed code site to rolling code without changing the operator. The reverse is also possible: a fixed code receiver can be added if you must support legacy transmitters that cannot be replaced — for example, a fleet of older trucks with built-in visor remotes. You lose the security gain, but you keep the operation running.

What to check before ordering remotes

1. Open the existing transmitter. DIP switches mean fixed code. No switches and a learn button on the receiver mean rolling code.

2. Note the frequency printed on the transmitter or receiver label — 315 MHz, 390 MHz, or 433 MHz are common in North America. They are not interchangeable.

3. Confirm the receiver model. Manaras Series 100 rolling code transmitters (RADIOEM 101) pair only with Series 100 receivers. Series 0 fixed code transmitters (RADIOEM 901) pair only with Series 0 receivers.

4. Count how many remotes the receiver can store. Commercial receivers typically hold 50 to 200 codes. If you are at capacity, you must erase a lost or stolen remote before adding a new one.

When to upgrade the whole system

If the operator is pre-2010, runs fixed code, and you manage a parkade or secure warehouse, the operator itself is the weak link. Modern commercial operators from Manaras (OMH, OPH, OTH lines), LiftMaster (Maxum series), and Hörmann (ProMatic, RotaMatic) ship with rolling code receivers built in and support encrypted protocols that resist cloning even at close range. The cost difference between a receiver swap and an operator replacement is often smaller than the deductible on a single break-in claim.

Practical rule for property managers

Standardize on one receiver platform across the property. Mixed fixed and rolling code populations create confusion — technicians waste time diagnosing “dead” remotes that are simply the wrong technology for the receiver. Specify rolling code for every new installation and every receiver retrofit. Keep a log of every transmitter serial number issued, and erase a code the same day a remote is reported lost.
