Monitored Photo Eye vs Non-Monitored: What UL 325 Requires Now

What changed and why it matters

UL 325 has required monitored primary entrapment protection on commercial door operators since the 2010 revision. A monitored photo eye sends a continuous signal to the control board. If that signal drops — cut wire, failed sensor, misalignment, power loss — the operator treats it as an obstruction and will not close. A non-monitored device only reports an obstruction when its beam is broken. It cannot tell the operator the device itself has failed.

How a monitored photo eye works

The transmitter and receiver sit on opposite sides of the opening, typically 4 to 6 inches off the floor. Infrared thru-beam technology reduces false signals from reflective surfaces. When the beam is interrupted, the cell sends an immediate electrical signal to the operator’s control board — the BOARD070M on Manaras-Opera operators — which stops and reverses the door.

The monitoring circuit is the difference. The control board polls the photo eye continuously. A healthy circuit returns a specific resistance or pulse pattern. If the board sees an open circuit, short, or wrong value, it faults the door open. That is the “monitored” part: the operator knows the sensor is alive, not just that the beam is clear.

Manaras-Opera’s PHOTO070 cells are ANSI/UL 325 recognized components. They mount with threaded brackets, allow ±2° tilt for alignment, and include 30 feet of cable. The enclosure is NEMA 1 — indoor rated.

Where non-monitored devices still fit

Non-monitored photo eyes like the PHOTO075 are UL 325 recognized as ancillary devices. They use retro-reflective technology: a single housing emits and receives, bouncing the beam off a reflector across the opening. IP67 enclosure, 2 m cable, PinPoint LED for alignment.

They are legal only as a supplement to a primary monitored device, or on constant-pressure-to-close circuits where a person holds the button and watches the door. They cannot serve as the sole entrapment protection on an automatic-close operator. If you wire a non-monitored cell as the only safety on a standard operator, the installation does not meet code.

The interface module exception

You can run a monitored photo eye on an older non-monitored operator using an interface module. The module converts the monitored signal into a dry contact the old board understands. It is a legitimate retrofit path when the operator still has service life but the safety system needs to meet current code. The reverse — putting a non-monitored cell on a monitored operator — does not work. The board will fault on the missing monitoring circuit.

What an inspector looks for

  • Primary entrapment protection: monitored photo eyes or monitored sensing edge on every automatic-close door.
  • Devices mounted no higher than 6 inches above the floor.
  • Wiring intact, no splices outside enclosures, cable rated for the environment.
  • Operator faults correctly when you disconnect the photo eye at the terminals — not just when you break the beam.
  • Label on the device showing UL 325 recognition.

If the operator reverses when you wave a hand through the beam but does not fault when you pull the wires at the board, the monitoring circuit is not connected or the device is non-monitored. That fails.

Common failure modes

Condensation inside the NEMA 1 enclosure corrodes the terminals. The 30-foot cable gets nicked by forklift traffic or pinched in the track angle. Alignment drifts until the monitoring signal drops out — the door faults open with nothing in the opening. Retro-reflective non-monitored cells lose the reflector or get fogged by washdown spray.

In cold storage, the beam can frost over. Thru-beam monitored cells handle this better than retro-reflective because the receiver expects a direct signal, not a bounced one. But ice on either lens kills the circuit.

Retrofit or replace

If the operator is pre-2010 and non-monitored, you have two paths. Add an interface module and monitored photo eyes — lower cost, keeps the operator. Or replace the operator with a current monitored model (Manaras OMH, OPH, LiftMaster MAXUM, Hörmann ProMatic) which includes the monitoring logic on board. The second path eliminates the module, updates the operator to modern duty-cycle ratings, and usually simplifies wiring.

The choice depends on the operator’s remaining life, parts availability, and whether the door cycle count justifies a full operator swap. A 15-year-old jackshaft on a low-cycle storage door can take the module. A high-cycle dock door with a tired motor should get the operator.

What to do next

If your doors close automatically and you are not sure whether the photo eyes are monitored, have a technician verify the monitoring circuit at the control board. It takes ten minutes with a meter. If the system is non-monitored, plan the upgrade before an inspection or an incident forces it.
