What the Classification Tells You
Class I Division 1 means flammable gases or vapours exist under normal operating conditions — not just during a spill or leak. The operator sits in that atmosphere every day. A standard industrial opener cannot be retrofitted for this. The motor, brake, limit switches, wiring, and enclosure must all carry the same rating, and the entire assembly must be certified as a unit.
Motor Construction: Explosion-Proof, Not Just Sealed
The motor housing is built to contain an internal explosion without rupturing or igniting the surrounding atmosphere. Look for XPFC or XPNV construction — explosion-proof, fan-cooled or non-ventilated — rated for Class I Group D (propane, gasoline, natural gas) and Class II Groups F and G (combustible dusts). The windings are potted. The bearings are sealed. The shaft exits through a flame path, not a gasket.
Single-phase capacitor-start and three-phase models both exist. Three-phase runs cooler under continuous duty. If your facility has three-phase power, use it.
Reduction and Output
A 45:1 worm gear in an oil bath reducer handles the torque multiplication. The oil bath doubles as a heat sink and a flame path. Output shaft speed is 38 rpm — slow enough that the door travels 6 to 12 inches per second, which is the code-compliant range for industrial doors in classified areas. The output shaft is 1 inch with a 1/4-inch keyway up to 1 hp; 1-1/4 inch above that.
Brake: Solenoid Drum-Band, Inside the Enclosure
The brake is a drum-band type solenoid brake mounted inside the hazardous-location enclosure. When power drops, the band clamps the drum mechanically — no separate brake motor, no external linkage. The electrical interlock that cuts power when the manual hoist is engaged is also inside the rated enclosure. That interlock is not optional. It prevents the motor from restarting while someone is on the chain hoist.
Manual Override: Floor-Level Chain Hoist
Every hazardous-location operator includes a floor-level chain hoist with an electrical cut-out. Pull the chain, the interlock opens, the motor is dead. You can move the door by hand. Release the chain, the interlock closes, power returns. The hoist mounts on the right side by standard; left side is a factory option. The chain length is set to floor level so no ladder is needed during an emergency.
Enclosure: The Part Most People Get Wrong
The control enclosure is die-cast aluminum, CSA certified and UL listed for Class I Division 1 and 2 Groups B, C, D; Class II Groups E, F, G; Class III; Type 4, 4X, 7, 9. That string of ratings matters:
- Type 4/4X — watertight, corrosion-resistant, hose-down capable
- Type 7 — explosion-proof for Class I Division 1
- Type 9 — dust-ignition-proof for Class II Division 1
All electrical components — contactors, relays, transformer, terminal blocks — live inside this box. The motor leads exit through hazardous-location certified fittings. No standard conduit bodies. No Myers hubs. The fittings are part of the certification.
Limit Switches: Rotary Cams in Oil
Rotary-type oil-impregnated steel cams drive commercial-grade switches. The limit shaft rides in self-lubricating bronze bushings. The cams stay in time after manual operation or motor removal — critical when the door must be positioned precisely for a fire door drop test or a security grille interlock.
Push-Button Station: Also Rated
The three-button station (open/close/stop) carries the same Class I Division 1 rating. It mounts on the wall in the classified area. Standard NEMA 4X stations will not pass inspection here. The station wiring runs in rigid conduit with sealed fittings back to the operator enclosure.
Conduit and Sealing: Where Installations Fail
The operator ships certified. The installation must stay certified. That means:
- Rigid metal conduit or PVC-coated rigid — no EMT, no flex
- Conduit seals (EYS/EYD) within 18 inches of the enclosure on each run entering a Division 1 area
- No splices inside the classified area unless they are in a rated box
- All unused openings plugged with certified plugs
An inspector will fail the job if the seal fitting is missing or the conduit is the wrong type. The operator manufacturer does not supply the conduit. The electrician must know the code.
Cold Weather and Coastal Salt
The oil-bath reducer and sealed motor handle -30°C starts without synthetic oil changes. The die-cast enclosure with Type 4X rating resists salt spray — but the conduit fittings and push-button station must also be 316 stainless or PVC-coated. Standard zinc-plated fittings will corrode in a coastal plant within two winters.
When You Need This Operator
- Propane or natural gas fueling stations
- Chemical processing rooms with open vessels
- Paint booths and spray areas
- Grain elevators and feed mills (Class II dust)
- Wastewater treatment digester buildings
- Battery charging rooms where hydrogen accumulates
If the area is classified Division 2 only — vapours present only under abnormal conditions — a Division 1 operator still works and is often specified for uniformity. The reverse is not true. A Division 2 operator in a Division 1 area is a code violation and a fire hazard.
What the Spec Sheet Won’t Tell You
The GHX operator from Manaras-Opera carries the ratings above. It fits standard-lift, high-lift, and vertical-lift sectional doors, plus rolling doors and grilles. But the spec sheet does not tell you:
- The door weight and cycle count that determine the horsepower — oversize the motor, not the enclosure
- The headroom and sideroom the operator body needs — it is wider than a standard jackshaft
- The lead time — hazardous-location units are built to order, typically 4 to 6 weeks
- That the electrician must pull permits and coordinate with the AHJ before the operator ships
