GDI SGWD Slide Gate Operator
The GDI SGWD family drives slide gates up to 8,500 lb at speeds up to 38 inches per second, and GDI’s sheet states there is no practical limit on the length of the slide gate. That combination is what makes it a common specification for industrial yards and secure compounds where the gate is long, heavy, and cycled constantly.
Like the rest of the GDI line the case is powder-coated 11-gauge steel with a lockable door, plus a double-lock maintenance access door and a chain-drive housing. The base configuration includes a brake with manual release.

GDI quotes the top speed slightly differently in different places — its website and this sheet do not match exactly — and GDI states it reserves the right to change specifications without notice. Treat the table as the sheet-published figures, and let us confirm gate weight, speed and options with GDI before anything is ordered.
Read the speed and weight columns together: the SL is the fast, light-gate unit, the SH trades speed for the ability to move an 8,500 lb gate. The SM is usually the sensible middle for a heavy industrial yard gate that still needs to open quickly.
Applications GDI lists for the SGWD
Industrial, commercial, institutional and government facilities, and high-end secure residential gates. The smooth controlled reversing and soft start/stop matter on a long gate — abrupt direction changes are what wear out rollers, chain and gate frames.
Battery backup, heating and air circulation
Battery backup is three 4 Ah (36 VDC) sealed batteries with an intelligent internal charger. A thermostatically controlled built-in heater and fan is available for temperature conditioning and air circulation inside the case — worth specifying on coastal sites where condensation inside a gate operator enclosure is the real enemy, not cold.
UL325 on this model
As with the GLWD, GDI lists UL325 compliance as optional on the SGWD sheet, available with a NEMA 4 photo-eye. Vehicular slide gates carry real entrapment risk, so specify the UL325 package up front and have the photo eyes and edges commissioned with the operator.
Common slide gate faults and what they usually mean
Gate moves slower than the rated 5–38 in/sec range on the SL or 3–17 in/sec on the SH. On a chain-drive unit this usually means the chain has stretched enough to jump a sprocket tooth, or the idler sprocket bearing is seizing and adding drag. Check chain tension first—there should be roughly ½ in. of deflection mid-span—then spin the idler by hand; roughness means replace the bearing, not just tension the chain.
Operator cycles but the gate reverses mid-travel with no obstruction. The SGWD’s smooth-reversing logic is sensitive to sudden current spikes. On the heavier SM (4,200 lb) and SH (8,500 lb) models, a worn bottom guide roller or a bent track section creates the spike. Put a level on the track and spin each roller; replace any that don’t turn freely.
Motor runs but gate doesn’t move. The base configuration includes a brake with manual release; verify the release lever hasn’t been left in the disengaged position after maintenance. If the lever is seated and the output shaft spins but the gate doesn’t, the chain has likely come off the drive sprocket—common after a hard manual push on a 2,500 lb SB gate.
Enclosure interior is condensing or the heater/fan option cycles constantly. The thermostatically controlled heater/fan is sized for the 11-gauge powder-coated case; if the double-lock maintenance door gasket is torn or the latch isn’t fully engaged, the unit can’t hold temperature and the heater runs continuously, tripping the internal breaker.
Photo eyes fault on a clear day. UL325 compliance is optional on this model; if the NEMA 4 photo eyes were not ordered, the installed eyes may be a lower NEMA rating and fogging internally. Confirm the eye housing is stamped NEMA 4 before troubleshooting alignment.
Specifying a slide gate correctly
Confirm the gate weight and daily cycle count first. The four SGWD variants have hard limits: SL 1,200 lb / 4,000 cycles, SB 2,500 lb / 2,500 cycles, SM 4,200 lb / 4,200 cycles, SH 8,500 lb / 1,800 cycles. Exceeding either number on the selected model voids the duty-cycle design and overheats the sealed gearmotor.
Measure the clear opening width and the tail (counterbalance) length. There is no practical gate-length limit, but the tail must be long enough to keep the chain engaged on the drive sprocket through full travel. On the SH model, the slower 3–17 in/sec speed means a longer tail reduces chain whip on start/stop.
Verify the available voltage at the pad. The unit accepts all standard voltages, but the battery-backup option is three 4 Ah 36 VDC sealed batteries—physical space for the battery tray is inside the 11-gauge case, so the concrete pad must accommodate the case footprint plus the required 24 in. front clearance for the lockable and double-lock maintenance doors to swing fully.
Decide on UL325 compliance at order time. It is optional and requires the NEMA 4 photo eye kit; the eye brackets mount to the case, so retrofitting later means drilling the powder-coated enclosure and re-sealing the penetrations.
Specify the thermostatically controlled heater/fan if the site sees temperatures below –20 °C or above 40 °C. The option is factory-installed only; the case has no field knockouts for the ducting.
Confirm the gate track is level and the bottom rollers are rated for the gate weight. The operator’s smooth reversing reduces stress, but it cannot compensate for a sagging track or undersized rollers—those will trip the current-sense reversal on every cycle.

- One operator, every common voltage. A single GDI unit connects to 115, 208, 230, 460 or 575 VAC, single or three phase, 50/60 Hz. You are not ordering a voltage-specific part number, which matters when a building’s service turns out to be different from what the drawings said.
- Sealed, maintenance-free GearMotor. Sealed stainless-steel bearings, no belts, no mechanical limit switches, no hydraulic cylinders to service.
- Electronically set open and close limits. Nothing mechanical to drift out of adjustment after a few thousand cycles.
- Soft start and soft stop, with open and close speeds set independently and adjustable on site.
- Battery backup capability as an add-on, so the door or gate still runs through an outage or a brownout.
- 24 VDC 1.5 A and 24 VAC 1 A available for external devices — loop detectors, photo eyes, card readers.
- UL/ULC listed, with field-upgradable Opto-Block, NEMA 4 photo-eye UL-325 packages, and a thermostat-controlled heater (115–575 VAC) orderable at any time.
