A commercial gate operator without access control is a gate you have to open manually. Once you have decided to automate the gate, the access control system determines who gets in, how they get in, and what happens when they leave. Getting this specification right for the specific application matters — a warehouse yard has different requirements than a strata parkade.

Proximity Fob and Card Systems

Proximity fob readers are the most common access control for strata parkades and controlled commercial entries. Residents or authorized users carry a keyfob or card, hold it near the reader, and the gate opens. The system can be programmed with individual fob codes, which means access can be revoked for specific users without changing the system for everyone else.

Keypad Entry

Keypad entry is appropriate for delivery personnel, occasional visitors, and applications where fob issuance is not practical. In high-traffic delivery environments a weatherproof keypad mounted at truck-cab height on a post before the gate is standard. Delivery drivers get a PIN, the gate opens, they enter. The PIN can be rotated on a schedule for security.

Telephone and Video Intercoms

A telephone intercom at the gate connects to one or more phones or a central intercom panel — a visitor calls in, someone inside answers and presses a button to open the gate. Video intercoms add a camera at the gate entry point — the person inside can see who is at the gate before deciding to open it. In urban Metro Vancouver commercial and strata applications video intercoms are increasingly standard.

Vehicle Loop Detectors

A vehicle loop detector is an inductive loop embedded in the pavement that detects the presence of a vehicle above it. Loop detectors are a safety requirement on automated commercial gates — they prevent the gate from closing on a vehicle partially through the opening, and they can automatically open the exit gate when a vehicle approaches from inside. We install loop detectors as part of every automated gate installation. For access control installation across Metro Vancouver call (604) 206-5727.
