What the Voltage Code Tells You
Every Manaras operator carries a product code that ends in a three-digit power designation — 611, 623, 643, 653, 681, 521, 533. That suffix is not a serial number. It is the voltage, phase, and frequency the motor is wound for. Wire it to the wrong supply and the operator will either not start or burn its windings in minutes.
The code structure is consistent across the Opera line (OMJ, OMH, OPJ, OPH, OHJ, OSH, MSJ, OGH, MGH, MRGH) and the trolley/rapido models (OTBH, OTH, MGT, OSL, MGSL, RSH, RVH). The environmental prefix (W, C, X) and model prefix (OMJ, OPH, etc.) describe the enclosure and mechanical package. The last three digits describe the electricity.
Breaking Down the Three Digits
First digit — Frequency
5 = 50 Hz (common outside North America)
6 = 60 Hz (standard in Canada and the U.S.)
Second digit — Nominal Voltage
1 = 120 V
2 = 208 V or 220 V
3 = 240 V or 380 V
4 = 480 V
5 = 600 V
Third digit — Phase
1 = Single phase
3 = Three phase
Examples
- 611 = 60 Hz, 120 V, single phase — the most common commercial plug-in voltage in Canada
- 623 = 60 Hz, 208 V, three phase — standard in many multi-tenant industrial buildings
- 643 = 60 Hz, 480 V, three phase — typical for larger warehouses with 480/277 V service
- 653 = 60 Hz, 600 V, three phase — common in older BC industrial parks fed at 600/347 V
- 681 = 60 Hz, 208 V, single phase — seen in some retail bays split from a three-phase panel
- 521 = 50 Hz, 220 V, single phase — export spec, not for North American grids
- 533 = 50 Hz, 380 V, three phase — export spec
If you see a code ending in 608, that is not a standard Manaras voltage suffix. It usually indicates a custom or legacy winding. Treat it as a red flag — verify the nameplate before connecting.
Why Phase Matters More Than Voltage
A 208 V single-phase motor (681) and a 208 V three-phase motor (623) both read 208 V line-to-line on a meter. They are not interchangeable. The single-phase unit has a start capacitor and a centrifugal switch; the three-phase unit relies on rotating magnetic field. Connecting a three-phase motor to single-phase power will cause it to hum, draw locked-rotor current, and trip the overload — or burn if the overload fails. Connecting a single-phase motor to three-phase power destroys the windings instantly.
Always confirm phase at the breaker panel, not just the voltage at the receptacle.
How to Verify Before You Order
1. Read the existing operator nameplate — voltage, phase, frequency, full-load amps. The code suffix should match.
2. Measure at the disconnect — line-to-line and line-to-neutral. A 120/208 V wye service gives 120 V L-N and 208 V L-L. A 347/600 V wye gives 347 V L-N and 600 V L-L. A 277/480 V wye gives 277 V L-N and 480 V L-L. Delta services have no neutral; you will see only line-to-line.
3. Check the breaker — single-pole breaker = single phase. Two- or three-pole common-trip breaker = three phase.
4. Match the code exactly — do not assume a 623 operator can be “rewired” for 611. The stator is wound differently. Order the correct suffix.
Common Mistakes in the Field
- Assuming 208 V is 240 V — a 621 (240 V single phase) motor on 208 V runs hot, loses torque, and shortens winding life. A 623 (208 V three phase) on 240 V over-fluxes the core.
- Using a 600 V operator (653) on a 480 V service — the motor will start but develop only ~64% rated torque. The door may not lift a loaded section.
- Ignoring the frequency digit — 50 Hz windings (5xx) on 60 Hz run faster, draw more current, and overheat. 60 Hz windings (6xx) on 50 Hz lose cooling airflow and saturate the core.
- Swapping a trolley operator (OTBH, OTH) for a jackshaft (OMH, OPH) without checking the code — mechanical mounting differs, but the voltage code rule is identical.
When the Code Is Missing or Illegible
Older operators sometimes have a painted-over nameplate or a replaced cover. If the suffix is unreadable:
- Measure the motor leads with a megohmmeter — three leads plus ground = three phase. Two leads plus ground = single phase (start/run windings will show different resistance).
- Count the power conductors in the flex whip — three hot + ground = three phase. Two hot (or hot/neutral) + ground = single phase.
- Call Manaras with the serial number. They can look up the original build sheet.
Do not guess. A wrong voltage code turns a $2,500 operator into scrap in one cycle.
