What the PHOTO070 Actually Does
The Manaras PHOTO070 is a monitored thru-beam photoelectric cell set — one transmitter, one receiver — wired directly to the BOARD070M control board. When the infrared beam breaks, the board sees an immediate signal change and stops or reverses the door. Unlike non-monitored sensors that only report “beam broken,” the PHOTO070 reports its own health. If the wiring opens, shorts, or the internal monitoring circuit fails, the board treats it the same as an obstruction: door refuses to close.
That distinction matters. A door that reverses two inches off the floor with no visible obstruction often has a monitoring fault, not an alignment problem.
Symptoms That Point to Alignment — And Ones That Don’t
Likely alignment:
- Door closes fully when you hold the wall button (constant-pressure override) but reverses on automatic close
- LED on the receiver flickers or stays off when the door is stationary
- One sensor got bumped by a forklift, pallet jack, or rolling ladder
Likely not alignment:
- Door won’t move at all in either direction — check power to the operator first
- Door opens but won’t close, and the receiver LED is solid — check for beam obstruction (cobweb, shrink wrap, ice) or a monitoring circuit fault
- Operator flashes a specific fault code on the BOARD070M display — read the code before touching the sensors
Alignment Procedure — Step by Step
1. Kill power to the operator. The BOARD070M monitors the circuit live. Adjusting sensors under power can trigger false faults or mask real ones.
2. Verify mounting. Both sensors must sit on the same horizontal plane, brackets tight, no vibration when the door runs. The PHOTO070 allows ±2° tilt in any direction — use it. If the bracket is bent, straighten or replace it. A bent bracket will never hold alignment.
3. Check the receiver LED. Power up. The receiver shows a steady LED when the beam is solid. A flickering LED means marginal alignment or contamination. No LED means no beam — either transmitter dead, wiring open, or gross misalignment.
4. Rough alignment. Loosen the mounting bolts just enough to pivot. Aim the transmitter at the receiver center. Tighten one bolt, watch the LED. If it goes solid, snug the second bolt and re-check. Do not over-tighten — you’ll twist the sensor off-axis.
5. Fine alignment. With the LED solid, tap each sensor gently with a screwdriver handle. The LED should not flicker. If it does, the alignment is marginal. Re-center and re-test.
6. Walk the beam path. Stand at the transmitter and sight along the beam line to the receiver. Look for anything crossing the path — cable chains, conduit, door track hardware, condensation on the lens. In cold storage, ice buildup on the lens is common and invisible from an angle.
7. Test under load. Run the door three full cycles. Watch the receiver LED through the full travel. It must stay solid. If it drops out at a specific door height, something on the door (roller bracket, cable, weather seal) is breaking the beam at that point.
Wiring Faults That Look Like Misalignment
The PHOTO070 ships with 30 ft (9.1 m) of cable. Common issues:
- Nicked insulation where the cable passes through the track angle or bracket — intermittent short to ground, board sees a monitoring fault
- Staple cuts from installation — same symptom
- Water in the junction box at the sensor — corrosion on the terminals adds resistance, monitoring circuit reads it as a fault
- Cable coiled inside the operator near the motor leads — induced noise on the monitoring circuit
If alignment checks out but the door still faults, disconnect the sensors at the board and ohm the cable pair end-to-end. Open or short means cable damage. Infinite resistance with sensors connected means the sensor itself has failed — the monitoring circuit inside the PHOTO070 has opened.
The ±2° Tilt Spec — What It Means in Practice
Manaras rates the PHOTO070 at ±2° tilt tolerance in all directions. On a 20-foot door span, 2° is roughly 8 inches of lateral offset at the receiver. That sounds generous. It is not. Vibration from a loaded door running on worn rollers will swing the sensor past 2° instantly. Mount sensors on the wall, not the track, whenever possible. If track mounting is unavoidable, use the heaviest bracket you can fabricate and add a diagonal brace.
When to Stop and Call
- Receiver LED never illuminates, transmitter verified powered, cable continuity good — sensor failed internally
- BOARD070M displays a monitored device fault code that clears only when the PHOTO070 is disconnected — monitoring circuit failure
- Door runs fine in constant-pressure but faults on automatic close, alignment and wiring verified — board monitoring input may be drifting (rare, but happens on older boards)
- You’ve spent 45 minutes on it. Photo eyes are cheap. Labor is not.
