The Manaras Rapido line — RGH worm-gear and RSH V-belt models — uses a speed managing device to handle soft-starts, soft-stops, and monitored control circuits on single-phase power. When the operator faults, the symptom usually points to that device, the brake solenoid, or the limit system. This guide walks through the failure modes we see on service calls across Metro Vancouver.
Speed Managing Device — What It Actually Does
The speed managing device sits on the control board and governs ramp-up and ramp-down. It replaces the hard start/stop of a standard contactor-driven operator with a controlled acceleration curve. On the RGH, output shaft speed runs 86 rpm opening / 57 rpm closing (20:1 reduction) or 38 rpm / 25 rpm (44:1). On the RSH, the V-belt primary reduction feeds chain-and-sprocket secondary stages for 94 rpm standard output. Both target 12–24 inches per second door travel.
When the device fails or drifts out of calibration, you see:
- Door slams at the floor or header — soft-stop not engaging
- Jerky start, then smooth run — soft-start circuit open or parameter lost
- Operator trips the monitored control circuit fault — device not reporting position feedback to the board
- Inconsistent cycle times door-to-door — speed profile corrupt
The device is not field-repairable. If the board self-test shows a speed device fault code, the board or the daughter module gets replaced. We carry stock for both Rapido models.
Brake Solenoid — The Other Half of the Stop
Both Rapido models use an electrically activated drum-band solenoid brake. Power off, brake engaged. Power on, solenoid pulls the band free. Two failure modes dominate:
Brake drag — Solenoid coil weak or air gap widened. The band rubs the drum during run. You hear a continuous metallic hiss. Motor current climbs, thermal overload trips, operator stops mid-cycle. Fix: adjust air gap per spec (typically 0.015–0.020 inch) or replace coil.
Brake no-release — Solenoid open circuit, wiring break, or control board output dead. Door will not move. Manual chain hoist engages, electrical interlock cuts power — that part works. Check 120 VAC at the solenoid terminals during a run command. No voltage means board or wiring. Voltage present but brake locked means mechanical seizure or coil failure.
Limit System — Accu-Cam on RGH, Rotary Cams on RSH
The RGH uses the Accu-Cam one-hand limit adjuster. The RSH uses rotary-type oil-impregnated steel cams on a limit shaft supported by bronze bushings. Both hold position through manual operation and motor removal.
Limit drift — On the RSH, bronze bushings wear after high-cycle service (200k+ cycles). The limit shaft develops play. Cams shift. Door stops short or over-travels. Bushings are replaceable; the shaft usually is not. On the RGH, the Accu-Cam mechanism can strip if forced with a wrench instead of the finger lever. Adjust by hand only.
Limit loss after power cycle — If the monitored control circuit loses its reference, the board may forget limits on power restore. Re-set limits and verify the speed managing device reports position correctly through a full open-close-open cycle before leaving the job.
Reduction Drive — Worm Gear vs V-Belt
RGH (worm gear, oil bath) — 20:1 or 44:1 reduction in sealed reducer with air breather. Output shaft 1 inch (20:1) or 1-1/4 inch (44:1) with 1/4 inch keyway. Failure signs: oil leak at output seal, breather clogged and pressurizing the case, worm gear pitting from water contamination. Oil should be clear amber. Milky oil means seal failure — change oil, replace seal, inspect gear.
RSH (V-belt primary, chain secondary) — 5L/B V-belt on input shaft, cast iron flanged pillow block bearings both shafts. Check belt tension: 1/2 inch deflection at mid-span under thumb pressure. Cracked belt or glazed sidewalls slip under load — door slows on heavy sections. Sprocket wear on the #50 chain drive shows as hooked teeth. Replace chain and sprockets as a set.
Manual Chain Hoist Interlock
Floor-level chain hoist with electrical cut-out. When the hoist engages, an interlock switch opens the motor control circuit. Common issue: hoist left slightly engaged after manual operation. Operator has power, lights work, but run command does nothing. Verify the hoist handle is fully seated in the disengaged detent. The interlock switch can also fail closed — operator runs with hoist engaged, destroying the hoist gearing. Test with a multimeter on the interlock terminals.
Control Board Diagnostics
On-board control board with radio receiver built in. LED status codes (refer to the manual for your firmware revision):
- Steady green — ready
- Flashing green — run active
- Flashing red — fault (count flashes for code)
- Steady red — hardware fault, board replacement required
Before condemning the board, verify 120 VAC input, 24 VAC control transformer output, and all safety device circuits (photo-eyes, safety edge, e-stop) are made. A single open safety contact mimics a board fault.
