What the Operator Is Telling You
Manaras OSL and MGSL operators run sliding doors on loading docks, parkades, and secure perimeters across Metro Vancouver. When one faults, the display or LED sequence is the only reliable starting point. Guessing burns time and parts. This guide walks through the faults we see most often on service calls — what the code means, what to check before you call, and where the repair actually lives.
Fault Codes and What They Mean
The controller flashes or displays a code. The manual lists them all; the ones below account for the majority of lockouts we encounter.
F1 — Motor Overload
The motor drew more current than the trip setting allows. On a sliding door, this usually means mechanical binding: debris in the track, a bent guide roller, or the door panel racking against the jamb. Check the track first. Clean the V-groove or box track. Spin each guide roller by hand — it should turn freely with one finger. If the door is heavy to push manually, the operator is not the problem.
F2 — Encoder Fault
The controller is not seeing pulses from the motor encoder. Could be a loose connector at the motor head, a cut cable in the cable carrier, or a failed encoder disc. We see this after forklift impacts that pinch the cable carrier against the header. Inspect the full cable run before swapping the motor.
F3 — Limit Switch Not Found
The operator ran to find its open or close limit and never saw the switch actuate. Common causes: the limit flag fell off the drive chain, the limit switch itself failed, or the chain jumped a tooth on the sprocket. On MGSL units with the magnetic limit system, verify the magnet is still on the chain and the sensor reads it. A multimeter on the switch terminals tells you in thirty seconds.
F4 — Safety Edge / Reversing Device Active
The 8k2 (or 10k) monitored safety edge circuit is open. If the door reverses instantly on close, this is the first place to look. Check the coil cord at the leading edge — conductors fatigue at the retractable reel. Verify the terminating resistor is present and correct at the end of the edge. A missing resistor reads as an open circuit every time.
F5 — Photo Eye / Presence Sensor Fault
The monitored photo-eye circuit is not happy. Alignment drift is the usual suspect on outdoor docks where the post settles. Clean both lenses. Confirm the beams are parallel and at the same height. If the LEDs show alignment but the operator still faults, swap the receiver head — they fail more often than transmitters.
F6 — Brake Fault
The brake coil circuit shows open or short. On OSL/MGSL the brake is a 24 VDC coil on the motor rear. Measure resistance at the brake leads (typically 40–60 ohms depending on motor size). Infinite or near-zero means the coil is done. Also check the brake rectifier in the control box — a shorted rectifier takes the coil with it.
F7 — Communication Fault (Expansion Boards)
The main board is not talking to an I/O expansion or radio receiver. Reseat the ribbon or terminal block. Look for corrosion on the pins — coastal salt air gets into enclosures that are not sealed to IP65.
Limit Switch Problems That Aren’t Fault Codes
The operator runs but stops short, overruns, or hunts at the limit. The code shows normal.
Mechanical limit flags — The flag on the drive chain slides over time. If the door stops six inches short, the flag has moved. Loosen the set screw, run the door to the correct position by hand, reposition the flag, tighten. Do this with power off.
Magnetic limits (MGSL) — The sensor reads a magnet on the chain. If the chain stretches, the magnet passes the sensor at a different point. The fix is re-teaching the limits through the menu, not moving the magnet. Follow the teach procedure in the manual exactly — skip a step and you lose both limits.
Limit switch bounce — A worn switch chatters at the end of travel. The controller sees multiple actuations and gets confused. Replace the switch. They cost less than the callback.
Safety Device Wiring — The 8k2 Monitored Circuit
Manaras operators require a monitored safety edge and monitored photo eyes for UL 325 / CAN/ULC-S325 compliance. The circuit expects a specific end-of-line resistor (8.2 kΩ standard, 10 kΩ on some firmware).
What breaks the monitor:
- Coil cord conductor fatigue at the retractable reel (high flex point)
- Water in the photo-eye housing — the receiver PCB corrodes at the terminal block
- A technician bypassing the resistor with a wire nut “to test” and leaving it that way
- Rodent damage on the low-voltage run along the header
How to verify:
Disconnect the safety edge at the operator terminal block. Measure resistance across the two wires with the door closed. You should read the resistor value ±5%. Open the edge (stand on the sensor strip) — resistance goes to infinity. If you read infinity with the edge closed, the circuit is open somewhere. Start at the coil cord.
Motor and Brake Issues
Motor hums, door doesn’t move — Brake not releasing. Check 24 VDC at the brake coil during a run command. Voltage present but brake locked? Coil is open or the brake disc is seized on the hub. Voltage absent? Trace back to the brake relay on the main board.
Motor runs, door moves, then faults F1 — Mechanical bind. Disconnect the drive chain. Run the operator unloaded. If it runs clean, the bind is in the door: track, rollers, or panel alignment. If it still faults, the motor bearings or gearbox are done.
Brake chatters on stop — The brake rectifier is failing or the air gap is out of spec. Measure the gap (typically 0.3–0.5 mm). Adjust per the service bulletin. If the rectifier diodes test leaky, replace the rectifier, not just the coil.
Control Power and Inputs
No display, no LEDs — Check the 120/240 VAC supply at the disconnect. Then the control transformer primary and secondary (24 VAC). A shorted 24 VAC wire on the limit switch run pulls the transformer down — disconnect the field wiring, remeasure at the board.
Door won’t respond to open command — Verify the open input (typically terminal 1 and common) sees a dry contact closure. Use a jumper at the board to rule out the keypad, loop detector, or radio receiver. If the jumper works, the field device or its wiring is the problem.
Door opens but won’t close — Almost always a safety device holding the close circuit open. Photo eye, safety edge, or the close limit switch not made. Watch the LED indicators on the board — each monitored input has a status LED. The one that’s off is the open circuit.
When to Call a Commercial Door Tech
You have verified the easy items: track clean, rollers spinning, limits set, safety circuits reading correct resistance, brake coil measuring in spec. The operator still faults. That is the line.
- Main board failure (output relays welded, processor lockup)
- Gearbox output shaft shear — the door free-wheels but the motor runs
- Encoder replacement requiring motor removal
- Firmware update or parameter reset that requires the Manaras service tool
- Any repair inside the motor brake assembly beyond air-gap adjustment

Preventive Checks That Stop Callbacks
Monthly:
- Clean photo-eye lenses with a damp cloth.
- Inspect the safety edge coil cord for jacket cracks at the reel.
- Verify the door pushes manually with less than 25 lb force.
- Listen for new noises — grinding, clicking, or a brake that drags.
Quarterly:
- Re-check limit positions. Chains stretch; flags slide.
- Measure brake coil resistance. A rising trend means the insulation is breaking down.
- Exercise the manual release — confirm it disengages and re-engages cleanly.
Annually:
- Full safety device functional test per CAN/ULC-S325.
- Torque the drive chain sprocket set screws.
- Verify the operator mounting bolts are tight — vibration walks them loose on high-cycle doors.
