The Manaras OGH is a gearhead-style jackshaft operator built for high-cycle commercial and industrial doors. It mounts directly to the torsion shaft, eliminating the trolley rail, and uses an internal gear reduction with an electromagnetic brake. When one stops working, the fault usually traces to one of five systems: limits, brake, chain coupling, motor windings, or the control board. This guide walks through each in the order a technician checks them on site.
The operator hums but the door does not move
Start with the chain coupling between the operator output shaft and the door torsion shaft. A sheared key, loose set screw, or stretched chain lets the motor spin without turning the shaft. Remove the chain guard and watch the coupling while someone hits the wall button. If the operator sprocket turns and the door sprocket does not, the fault is mechanical, not electrical.
Check chain tension. The OGH runs a #40 or #50 roller chain depending on model. Slack should be roughly half an inch of deflection at mid-span. Too tight loads the output shaft bearings; too loose jumps teeth under load. Adjust at the operator mounting slots, not by adding half-links.
Door moves a few inches then stops — limits drifting
The OGH uses a mechanical limit nut assembly driven by a limit shaft inside the operator. Vibration and thermal cycling walk the nuts over time. On a high-cycle door (200+ cycles/day), expect to re-set limits every six months.
To re-set: jog the door to the desired open position using the open/close buttons on the board. Loosen the limit nut lock screw, rotate the open limit nut until the microswitch clicks, re-tighten. Repeat for close. Verify the door seals at the floor without crushing the bottom seal — the close limit should stop the door with 1/8″ to 1/4″ of seal compression.
If limits drift again within weeks, the limit shaft bearing or drive gear inside the operator is worn. That requires operator removal and bench repair.
Brake does not release — door will not move, motor draws high current
The OGH electromagnetic brake is spring-set, power-release. When the motor gets voltage, the brake coil energizes and pulls the brake disc off the friction surface. If the coil is open, the rectifier has failed, or the air gap has widened past spec, the brake stays locked.
Test sequence:
1. Kill power. Remove the brake cover.
2. Measure coil resistance at the brake leads. A healthy coil reads 15–40 ohms depending on voltage (120V vs 208/240V). Infinite resistance means open coil — replace the brake assembly.
3. Check the rectifier on the control board. The brake runs on rectified DC. A failed rectifier passes AC to the coil, which chatters and overheats. Measure DC voltage at the brake leads during a run command. You should see 90–100 VDC on a 120V unit. If you see AC or zero, the board rectifier is bad.
4. Air gap. Manaras spec is 0.012″–0.020″ (0.3–0.5 mm). Use feeler gauges at three points around the disc. If the gap is wide, the brake spring has fatigued or the friction material is worn past service limit. Replace the brake module — do not shim it.
Door reverses at the same spot every cycle — not a limit issue
If the door hits a specific height and reverses, but the limit nuts are not tripping, the control board is seeing a false obstruction signal. The OGH board monitors motor current (amperage limiting) and/or an external entrapment sensor input.
Disconnect the photo-eye and safety edge wires at the board terminals. Run the door. If it completes the cycle, the fault is in the safety circuit — usually a pinched safety edge wire, misaligned photo-eye, or water in the junction box. Reconnect one device at a time to isolate.
If the door still reverses with safeties disconnected, the board’s current sensing is tripping. This happens when:
- Track binding (bent vertical track, roller off track, broken hinge)
- Spring failure (one spring of a pair broken — door weight doubles)
- Bearing seizure (centre bearing or end bearing)
- Gearbox wear inside the operator (metal particles in the oil)
Check the door balance manually with the operator disconnected. A properly balanced commercial door should stay put at any position and take no more than 15–20 lbs of force to move. If it takes two hands and a grunt, the operator is fighting the door, not a board fault.
Control board LED codes
The OGH board (Manaras part 100-100-001 or equivalent) uses a single diagnostic LED. Flash patterns:

Count the flashes from a cold power-up. Cycle power, wait for the board to initialize (steady on for 2 seconds), then command a move. The pattern repeats until cleared.
Motor runs hot or trips thermal overload
The OGH uses a capacitor-start, capacitor-run single-phase motor (1/2 HP to 2 HP depending on model) or a three-phase motor on 208/240/480/600V. Single-phase units are the ones that burn out from capacitor failure.
Symptoms: motor hums, draws locked-rotor current, thermal overload trips after 10–30 seconds. The start capacitor (black cylindrical, typically 150–300 µF) or run capacitor (oval, 15–40 µF) has failed.
Test with a capacitor meter. Replace both if either is out of spec — they age together. Use Manaras-specified values; a “close enough” capacitor from a wholesaler changes the phase angle and kills the winding in weeks.
Three-phase motors rarely fail electrically. If a three-phase OGH trips overload, check for phase loss (blown fuse, bad contactor), voltage imbalance (>2% between legs), or mechanical binding.
Chain jumping or noise under load
A worn output sprocket or door sprocket lets the chain ride up on the teeth under torque. Inspect both for hooked teeth. Replace as a set — running a new chain on worn sprockets ruins the chain in days.
Check sprocket alignment. The operator and door shaft must be parallel within 1/16″ over the coupling length. Misalignment eats chain and side-loads the operator output bearing. Shim the operator mounting feet if needed.
Lubricate the chain with a tacky chain lube (not WD-40, not motor oil) every 3,000 cycles or six months. A dry chain stretches fast and loads the gearbox.
When to replace the operator
The OGH gearbox is not field-rebuildable. If you find metal in the oil, the output shaft has play, or the housing is cracked from impact, replace the unit. Do not upsize the motor to compensate for a heavy door. Fix the spring balance. An oversized operator on an unbalanced door breaks tracks, hinges, and headers — not the operator.
