Manaras MGT Troubleshooting — Fault Codes, Limits, and Trolley Diagnostics

The Manaras MGT is a trolley operator built for industrial sectional doors running high cycles. When it faults, the display flashes a code or the door simply stops mid-travel. Most callbacks come from three things: limit switches drifting out of adjustment, the brake circuit opening under load, or the entrapment protection triggering on a door that is actually binding. This guide walks through the codes you will see on the LCD and the mechanical checks that resolve them.

Fault Codes on the LCD Display

The MGT controller reports faults as alphanumeric codes. The list below covers the ones that appear most often on service calls in the Lower Mainland.

E1 — Open Limit Not Set

The operator has no recorded open position. Run the door to the fully open position using the wall control, then press and hold the SET button until the display confirms. If the door reverses before reaching the header, check the open limit cam on the limit shaft — it may have slipped.

E2 — Close Limit Not Set

Same procedure as E1, but for the closed position. Verify the door seats fully on the floor before setting. A door that stops 12 mm short will trip the safety edge on the next cycle.

E3 — Entrapment Protection Activated

The safety edge or photo-eyes detected an obstruction. On an MGT, this code also appears when the door binds in the track and the force sensor interprets the spike as an obstruction. Disconnect the safety edge and run a test cycle. If the fault clears, the edge or its wiring is the problem. If the fault persists with the edge disconnected, the door is mechanically binding — check roller condition, track alignment, and spring balance.

E4 — Brake Circuit Fault

The brake solenoid did not release or the controller did not detect release voltage. Measure 24 VDC at the brake coil terminals during a run command. No voltage means a controller output failure. Voltage present but brake not releasing means a seized brake hub or broken return spring. The MGT brake is a dry disc pack; contamination from chain lube overspray will cause drag. Clean the friction surfaces with brake cleaner and re-test.

E5 — Motor Overload / Thermal Trip

The motor thermal protector opened. Reset by cycling power. If it trips again on the next cycle, measure running amps against the nameplate. High amps with a balanced door indicate worn motor bearings or a failing capacitor. High amps only under load (door moving) point to track friction or spring imbalance.

E6 — RPM Sensor / Encoder Fault

The controller is not seeing pulses from the motor encoder. Check the encoder cable at the motor junction box — vibration works these loose. If the cable is seated and the fault remains, the encoder disc may be cracked or the sensor contaminated with metal dust from the brake.

E7 — Communication Fault (Accessory Bus)

A wired accessory (photo-eye, keypad, loop detector) is not responding. Disconnect accessories one at a time until the fault clears. The last one disconnected is the culprit. Water ingress at the photo-eye housing is the most common cause in coastal BC warehouses.

Limit Switch Drift and Re-Adjustment

The MGT uses a mechanical limit shaft driven by a chain from the output sprocket. Over thousands of cycles, the limit chain stretches and the cams rotate. The door will stop short or over-travel.

1. Close the door fully. Verify the bottom bar contacts the floor evenly across the width.

2. Remove the limit cover. Rotate the close-limit cam until the microswitch clicks. Replace the cover.

3. Run a full open-close cycle. Watch the door stop position. Adjust in 1/4-turn increments until the door seals without crushing the bottom astragal.

4. Repeat for the open limit. The top section should clear the header by 25–50 mm.

Do not rely on the electronic “auto-set” routine for final positioning on a high-lift or vertical-lift track. The geometry changes the relationship between shaft rotation and door travel. Set manually.

Brake Release and Holding Torque

The MGT brake must release cleanly at start and engage instantly at stop. A brake that drags overheats the motor. A brake that engages late lets the door drift — dangerous on a vertical-lift door.

Test procedure:

With the door disconnected from the trolley (pull the emergency release), command an open cycle. The motor should spin freely. If it groans or draws high current, the brake is not releasing fully. Remove the brake cover. Check the air gap — spec is 0.3–0.5 mm. Adjust with the shims provided. Inspect the friction discs for glazing or oil. Replace as a set if either disc shows wear past the service line stamped on the hub.

Chain Tension and Trolley Alignment

The drive chain connects the operator output shaft to the trolley. Slack chain jumps teeth on the sprocket, causing lost position and limit drift. Overtight chain loads the output bearing and the trolley carriage bearings.

Correct tension:

At mid-span, the chain should deflect 6–10 mm under thumb pressure. Adjust at the trolley take-up bolt. After tensioning, run the door and watch the trolley carriage. It must travel the full length of the rail without binding or side-loading the rail brackets. A carriage that chatters or squeals has a bent rail or a worn nylon shoe. Replace the shoe; do not lubricate it — grit embeds in the nylon and accelerates rail wear.

Entrapment Protection: Safety Edge vs. Force Limiting

The MGT supports both a monitored safety edge (resistive or pneumatic) and an internal force-limiting algorithm. They work in parallel. If either trips, the door reverses and flashes E3.

Safety edge test:

Place a 50 mm block on the floor under the door center. Close the door. It must reverse on contact. If it crushes the block, the edge is not wired to the controller terminals correctly, or the edge resistor value does not match the controller setting (default 8.2 kΩ for resistive edges).

Force limit calibration:

With the safety edge disconnected, run the door closed. If it reverses before the floor, the force limit is set too sensitive. Enter the installer menu (hold SET + UP for 3 seconds), navigate to FORCE ADJUST, and increase the close-force value by 10 %. Test again. Repeat until the door closes fully without reversing, then add one more step for margin. Reconnect the safety edge and verify the block test still reverses.

Photo-Eye Alignment on Industrial Doors

Wide industrial bays (4.5 m +) exaggerate photo-eye misalignment. The beams diverge; a 2 mm offset at the transmitter becomes 15 mm at the receiver. The MGT will fault E7 or show intermittent E3.

Alignment method:

Use a laser pointer taped to the transmitter housing, aimed at the receiver lens. Adjust the receiver bracket until the dot centers on the lens. Tighten the bracket bolts. Vibration from forklift traffic loosens these brackets monthly in busy warehouses. Include bracket torque in your quarterly PM checklist.

Cold Weather Operation

Below -10 °C, the MGT gearbox oil thickens and the brake return spring loses force. Symptoms: slow start, E4 brake fault, or the door stalls halfway up.

Mitigation:

  • Switch to synthetic gear oil (ISO VG 68 synthetic) at the next service.
  • Install the Manaras cold-weather brake spring kit (heavier return spring).
  • Add a 100 W strip heater inside the operator enclosure, wired to the control circuit so it runs whenever the operator has power.

When to Call a Technician

  • Encoder fault (E6) that persists after cable reseating — the encoder disc requires motor removal.
  • Controller output failure (no brake voltage, no motor voltage) — board-level repair or replacement.
  • Door binds mechanically but track, rollers, and springs check out — possible counterbalance shaft or bearing failure inside the door assembly.
  • Any fault on a fire-rated door where the operator is part of the listed assembly — modifications void the label.
