What these operators are and where they fail
The Manaras OMH and OMJ are medium-duty jackshaft operators built for commercial sectional doors up to 24 feet wide and 600 pounds. They mount beside the torsion shaft, drive through a chain and sprocket, and use an electro-mechanical brake to hold the door when power cuts. The OMH runs on 120 V single-phase; the OMJ is the three-phase counterpart. Both share the same control board, brake module, and RPM sensor architecture. That shared platform means the same failure modes show up across both models — limit switch drift, brake solenoid burnout, RPM sensor fouling, and control board relay weld.
Limit switch drift — why the door stops short or reverses
The rotary limit switch assembly sits on the operator’s output shaft. It counts revolutions through a gear train and trips cams at the programmed open and close positions. On a jackshaft, the output shaft turns once per door cycle. Over 50,000 cycles, the nylon limit gears wear unevenly. The close cam shifts first because it sees more torque — the door’s weight loads the shaft on the way down. You will see the door stop six to twelve inches off the floor, then reverse to open. The control board logs a “limit fault” but the real cause is mechanical wear in the limit gearbox.
Check it: remove the limit cover, rotate the shaft by hand with the door disconnected, and watch the cams. If the close cam trips before the door would hit the floor, the gear train is worn. Replacing the limit assembly takes twenty minutes. Re-camming the existing unit works once; the second time it drifts again inside a month.
Brake solenoid — the click you hear but the door does not move
The holding brake is a spring-applied, electrically released disc pack. When the control board energizes the brake coil, the solenoid pulls the pressure plate off the friction discs and the shaft spins freely. If the coil opens or the rectifier fails, the brake stays engaged. The motor hums, the overload trips, and the door does not move.
Test: with power off, back-drive the shaft by hand. It should turn with firm resistance — the brake is holding. Apply 120 VAC directly to the brake coil leads (disconnected from the board). The brake should release cleanly with a sharp *clack*. No release means the coil or rectifier is dead. Coil resistance should read 18–22 ohms on the OMH, 45–55 ohms per phase on the OMJ. Replace the brake module as a unit; the friction discs wear at the same rate as the coil insulation degrades.
RPM sensor — ghost reversals and “obstruction” faults
A hall-effect sensor reads a toothed wheel on the motor shaft. The board expects a clean pulse train — 60 pulses per revolution on these models. Metal dust from the brake discs, oil mist from the gearbox, or a cracked sensor housing all degrade the signal. The board interprets missing pulses as an obstruction and reverses the door. You get a “safety fault” code with nothing in the photo-eye path.
Clean the sensor face with contact cleaner and a lint-free wipe. Check the air gap — 0.8 to 1.2 mm to the tooth tips. If the sensor body is cracked (common after a hard vibration event like a forklift hit), replace it. Do not shim the bracket; the sensor mounts on a slotted tab for a reason. The gap is set at the factory and should not need adjustment unless the motor shaft has axial play — which means the motor bearings are shot and the whole motor needs replacement.
Control board relay weld — door runs but will not stop
The OMH/OMJ board uses two DPDT relays for motor direction. Under heavy inductive load — a 1 HP motor starting against a cold door — the contacts arc and eventually weld. The door opens on command but ignores the close limit. The board still shows power, the limit switches click, but the motor keeps running until the thermal overload trips.
Diagnosis: command a close cycle, watch the board LEDs. The “close” LED stays lit after the limit trips. Tap the relay gently with a screwdriver handle; if the motor stops, the contacts are welded. Board replacement is the only reliable fix. Conformal-coated replacements from Manaras resist the coastal humidity that accelerates corrosion on the trace side.
Three-phase specific: phase loss and rotation
The OMJ will not start if any phase is missing. The board monitors all three legs and locks out with a “phase fault” code. A blown fuse on the panel, a loose lug in the disconnect, or a bad contactor coil on the branch circuit all look the same to the operator. Check voltage at the operator terminal block — not at the panel. Phase rotation must be A-B-C for the motor to turn the correct direction. If the door runs up on a “down” command, swap any two line leads at the operator. Do not change the motor leads; the brake and RPM sensor are wired for rotation.
When to call a technician
- Limit gearbox replacement requires the door to be balanced and disconnected. A 200-pound door on a loose shaft will crush fingers.
- Brake module replacement means compressing the spring pack. The factory tool is a threaded rod and plate; improvising with C-clamps risks the spring ejecting at face level.
- Control board replacement requires re-programming limits, force settings, and timer-to-close. The board ships blank.
- Any fault that returns after a reset indicates a root cause — worn shaft bearing, misaligned sprocket, voltage drop on a long run — that a meter and a ladder will not find.
